After moving into their new home, parents Josh and Renée Lambert’s eldest son slips into a coma. After doctors finding out their son has no head trauma, the parents have no idea what has happened to their son. After horrible events start to take place, they take the help of Elise Rainer, a paranormal investigator, who tells them about their son’s ability to venture into ‘The Further’ and the demons who are taking advantage of this.
Chris MacNeil and her daughter Regan relocate to Washington D.C. where Chris is filming a movie, in this time Regan begins to act strangely. After undergoing neurological tests doctors cannot find anything that is causing her behaviour. As Regan’s decline worsens, she begins to speak in tongues and swear, at this point Chris turns to Father Karras, a Catholic priest and psychiatrist in order to conduct an exorcism. Father Merrin is then called in as he has previously conduct an exorcism.
The movie presents the episode "The Haunted Asylum" of the reality show Grave Encounters. The director and his team of paranormal investigators go to the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital to spend the night locked inside the haunted place, where the caretaker would release them the next morning. But time seems to be different. They learn that the building is inescapable and they are frightened by individuals who resign in the asylum. The team soon gives signs of insanity.
