Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

Front Cover

Title – Orthodox, I picked this name as orthodox is to do with normality and the standard thing to do, and in a way, this connotes to pop music, as pop is a genre that a large amount of people like, so it can be linked with normality. The word orthodox means something that is normal or usual, and because a lot of people like pop music, it can be seen as normal, so I felt that orthodox expressed my magazines message well in the title. This helped me attract my target audience, as the name of the magazine connotes with pop music, meaning my target audience are able to know what my music magazine is about at a glance.

Famous names on the page – I included artists such as Ed Sheeran, Rihanna and Adele on my front cover, firstly because they are all artists that make pop music. As well as this, these artists are young and are in the public eye at the moment because of album releases and tours, meaning that my target audience will be pulled in by these names and interested in my magazine because of this.

Stance of my model – My model is standing upright and looking directly at the camera which helps to attract the reader, as the image is engaging and relaxed, meaning that the reader won’t be put off by the image unlike a magazine such as Kerrang! which is quite in your face.

USP – A free poster inside which helps to catch the eye of the reader and interest them, as my target audience are young people who are more likely to put posters up on their bedroom wall. As well as this, I included a QR Code onto my front cover so that my target audience can interact on an app with the magazine. This allows greater accessibility of my magazine as it means the reader doesn’t have to bring the physical copy around with them; they can just use their smart phone and read the magazine whenever they want. And this allows there to be more content to do with the magazine, as there will be different stories on the app then there is in the actual magazine, meaning that my magazine has a multi-platform brand. This will help to attract more people, as it’s almost a mystery to find out what is being written about on the app that is different to in the actual magazine. Lastly, the main USP to my magazine is that it focuses exclusively on pop music which is different to a lot of magazines currently on the market and can be used to attract my target audience to want to buy my magazine.

Price – my magazine is priced at £2 which is cheap for a magazine. It allows my target audience, who are younger people who don’t have that much money to their name, to be able to afford the magazine which should encourage repeat purchases every week, as my magazine is a weekly magazine. Also, because it is a new magazine on the market, because of its value it should attract people as £2 is fairly cheap for a weekly magazine that is trying to attract people who like pop music.

Contents Page

Bright colours used to show that the page is the contents page – On the page, there are many colours used, but the main colours being red and black. Red is used for the text of the cover lines on the page, as red is a popular colour and helps the cover lines to stand out. This helps to attract my target audience as the use of red helps to brighten up the page a bit more and draws the readers’ eye to this part of the page.

Website link (bottom right of page) – There is a website link in the bottom right of the page, that helps link both the print version and the online version together. It means that the audience of the magazine can access the magazine in more than once place, in turn increasing the portability of the magazine. The text for the website link is in the colour red with a white stroke around the text, this helps it stand out on the page so that the reader will notice its presence on the page, meaning that they should visit the website because of this.

Bold cover lines – The use of the bold cover lines helps the page to look more vibrant and means that the reader should be attracted to the page. They are in a bold font, and have a white outline on them which makes them eye catching on the page, because the white outline is the opposite colour to the background, meaning it is easily visible. As well as this, the colour of the page numbers which is next to the cover lines, is a red/maroon colour, which is a striking colour and helps to make the whole page look more exciting and colourful. The use of colour also keeps the house style intact, as the colours used are continued over from the front cover to the contents page.

Colours used on the page as a whole (Maroon/red, common colour, links to pop) – The contents page of this magazine consist of 3 colours, black, white and a maroon/red colour, and they are all used on the front cover, which keeps the house style of the magazine persistent. Black is used for the background of the page, the colour of the text of the cover lines, and for the outlines on some of the text in the contents sticker in the top right of the page. Red/maroon is used for the sticker in the top right of the page to show that this page is the contents page, the colour of the text used for the page numbers, the colour for the text of the website URL and the date issue and issue number in the top left of the page. White is used for the colour of the title of the magazine as well as its strapline, the colour of the word ‘Contents’ and the outlines of most of the text on the page. The use of the colour black helps to shape the whole page, as the background of the page is black meaning it creates a canvas like layout for colour to be spewed onto the page so it looks vibrant and aesthetically pleasing to the reader. The use of the colour red/maroon helps to make certain elements of the page to stand out, like the top right of the page, and the page numbers. It makes it so the reader will be attracted to these parts of the page, which are of importance, so that the reader knows what page they are on, and what pages the articles in the magazine are on. The use of red also connotes pop music themes, as red is a popular colour with a lot of people, and these are the type of people who are the target audience for this magazine. The use of the colour white helps to emphasise the words on the page, so that they draw attention to the reader.

Large pictures on the page – The pictures of the page are used to give the reader extra information about the articles in the magazine at a glance, so that they don’t have to read the cover lines to know what will be inside the magazine. This helps the magazine to be more accessible and in turn easier for the reader to consume, as the magazine isn’t all solid text. There are 4 images on the page, which all link to articles in the magazine, and create a more diverse way of presenting what is in the magazine. The images are large and clear on the page, so that the reader can easily see what they are from a distance.

DPS

Expletive used for quote – There is an expletive used in the quote on the page on the left, which connotes the attitude of the artist on this double page spread. She is a pop artist, and she is also young and swear words are a common part of life with the younger generation. This might help the magazine to appeal to the younger audiences, and help the magazine stand out. This is because the expletive use will intrigue the reader and draw them in, so that they read the article to find out why the artist has said what she’s said.

Bright image – The image used on this DPS is a bright and vibrant image that connotes pop music, mainly because of the clothing. The picture was taken during the day, and the lighting means that the artist is clearly visible on the page. The facial expression of the model is one of relaxation and openness to the reader, which in turn should attract the reader’s attention more and make them want to read the article more.

White background helps the text to stand out – A white background is used to help the text stand out so that the reader can easily read what the article is all about to gain an insight on the artist’s life. It lets the questions on the page catch the readers eye, as red is a vibrant colour and attracts attention. As well as this, the use of black for the answers to the questions on the page helps that text to stick out, as black is the opposite colour of white. This is seen in many magazines such as Q and Rolling Stone, which helps to make my magazine reinforce music magazine conventions.

Colours used overall (red, common colour, links to pop) – There are a total of 3 colours used on the page, which are white, black and red. Firstly, white, which is used for the background of the double page spread and the outline of the page numbers and website URL. Black is used for the answers to the questions asked in the interview, and the 2 large pull quotes on the page. Red is used for the questions that have been asked for this article. The colour white helps the text seem prominent on the page, and helps to reinforce music magazines conventions, as the text on the page in magazines such as Q and Billboard, stand out in the way that the text in my magazine does. The colour black allows the text to be clearly visible on the page, and continues over the house style from the front cover and the contents page, but mainly the front cover. This in turn makes the magazine more attractive to the audience which could help to boost its sales. The colour red means that the reader knows where the questions are on the page, of which have been asked in the interview. This means that the reader won’t be confused when reading the double page spread, which should give the reader a more enjoyable experiencing when they read my magazine.
